The Origins of Vedic Jyotish

Jyotish is one of the six Vedangas — the limbs of the Vedas. It is considered the eye of the Vedas (Vedachakshu), the faculty through which the ancient sages perceived time, karma, and destiny. The foundational texts of Jyotish include the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, attributed to the sage Parashara, and the Jaimini Sutras of Maharishi Jaimini.

How Vedic Jyotish Differs from Western Astrology

The most significant technical difference is the zodiac system used. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is fixed to the seasons and the Earth's relationship with the Sun. Vedic Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac, which is aligned with the actual positions of the constellations in the sky.
