Vastu Shastra — the ancient Indian science of architecture and spatial harmony — is based on the principle that the physical spaces we inhabit profoundly affect our health, relationships, prosperity, and spiritual wellbeing. The word Vastu comes from the Sanskrit root meaning "to dwell," and Shastra means "science" or "scripture."

The Five Elements

Vastu Shastra is built on the foundation of the five elements (Pancha Bhuta): Earth (Prithvi), Water (Jal), Fire (Agni), Air (Vayu), and Space (Akasha). A Vastu-compliant home balances these five elements in the appropriate directions and zones of the building.

The Eight Directions

Each of the eight directions is governed by a specific deity and element: North (Kubera — wealth), Northeast (Ishanya — spirituality), East (Indra — prosperity), Southeast (Agni — fire), South (Yama — discipline), Southwest (Nirrti — stability), West (Varuna — water), and Northwest (Vayu — air).

10 Essential Vastu Principles

1. Main entrance: The main door should ideally face North, Northeast, or East. 2. Kitchen: The kitchen should be in the Southeast (fire zone), with the cook facing East. 3. Master bedroom: The Southwest corner is ideal for the master bedroom. 4. Puja room: The Northeast corner is the most auspicious for a prayer room. 5. Toilets: Should not be in the Northeast or Southwest. 6. Staircase: Should be in the South, Southwest, or West. 7. Water bodies: Wells, borewells, and water tanks should be in the North or Northeast. 8. Clutter: Clutter blocks energy flow — keep spaces clean and organised. 9. Colours: Use light, warm colours in living areas and avoid dark colours in the Northeast. 10. Mirrors: Avoid placing mirrors facing the bed or the main entrance.
