Kundli matching, also known as Kundali Milan or Guna Milan, is the astrological process by which the compatibility of two individuals is assessed before marriage.
What Is Guna Milan?
Guna Milan is the primary method of Kundli matching in North Indian Vedic astrology. It involves comparing the birth charts of the prospective bride and groom across eight categories called Ashtakoota — eight aspects of compatibility. Each category carries a specific number of points, totalling 36 Gunas in all.
The Eight Kootas
The eight Kootas are: Varna (spiritual compatibility, 1 point), Vashya (mutual attraction, 2 points), Tara (birth star compatibility, 3 points), Yoni (physical and intimate compatibility, 4 points), Graha Maitri (mental compatibility, 5 points), Gana (temperament, 6 points), Bhakoot (emotional and financial compatibility, 7 points), and Nadi (health and progeny, 8 points).
Interpreting the Score
A score of 18 or above out of 36 is generally considered acceptable. A score of 24 or above is considered good. A score of 30 or above is considered excellent. However, the score alone does not tell the complete story — a skilled Jyotish Acharya will also examine the charts for Doshas, the strength of the 7th house (house of marriage), and the overall compatibility of the Dashas.
Beyond the Score: A Holistic Assessment
Pandit Khushal Joshi's approach to Kundli matching goes beyond the Guna score. He examines the Navamsha chart (the divisional chart of marriage), the placement and strength of Venus and Jupiter, the presence of Mangal Dosha, and the overall karmic compatibility of the two charts.
