Gemstone therapy — known as Ratna Chikitsa in Sanskrit — is one of the most powerful and immediate remedial measures in Vedic astrology. The right gemstone, worn correctly, can strengthen a benefic planet and bring positive changes in health, relationships, career, and spiritual life. The wrong gemstone, however, can have adverse effects.

The Planetary Gemstones

Each of the nine planets (Navagrahas) is associated with a primary gemstone: Ruby for the Sun, Pearl for the Moon, Red Coral for Mars, Emerald for Mercury, Yellow Sapphire for Jupiter, Diamond for Venus, Blue Sapphire for Saturn, Hessonite Garnet for Rahu, and Cat's Eye for Ketu.

How Gemstones Are Selected

In Vedic astrology, gemstones are selected based on the birth chart — specifically, the strength and placement of planets, the Lagna (ascendant), and the current Dasha period. The general principle is to strengthen benefic planets — those that are well-placed but weak — rather than to pacify malefic planets.

Quality and Authenticity

The quality of the gemstone matters enormously. A natural, untreated gemstone of good clarity is required for therapeutic purposes. Synthetic stones, heat-treated stones, or stones with significant inclusions are considered ineffective or potentially harmful in Vedic tradition.

Wearing Protocols

Each gemstone has specific protocols for wearing: the appropriate metal (gold, silver, or panchdhatu), the finger on which it should be worn, the day and time for first wearing, and the mantra to be recited. Pandit Khushal Joshi provides complete guidance on all these aspects during a gemstone consultation.
